Eucalyptus Essential Oil in the Sauna – How to Use It Safely

Few scents feel as naturally at home in a Finnish sauna as eucalyptus. Fresh, green and clear in character, it adds a crisp aromatic note to heat, steam and wood.

For many Finns, sauna is not reserved for special wellness occasions. It is part of everyday life – a place for warmth, washing, quiet and time together. At the centre of the experience is löyly: the wave of steam and heat created when water is poured onto the hot sauna stones.

Eucalyptus can add another layer to this simple ritual. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, however, the amount and method matter. In the heat and relatively small space of a sauna, even a little fragrance can feel surprisingly strong.

Here is our practical guide to using eucalyptus essential oil in the sauna: how much to use, what not to do and how to keep the experience pleasant for everyone.

Why eucalyptus suits the sauna

Eucalyptus has a distinctive scent: fresh, cool, green and slightly sharp.

In the warmth of the sauna, its fragrance becomes more noticeable and spreads quickly with the steam. The contrast between the heat of the sauna and the fresh aromatic character of eucalyptus makes it particularly well suited to the setting.

At SEES, we prefer to think of fragrance as part of the atmosphere rather than something that takes over the room. In the sauna especially, a little is often enough.

How to use eucalyptus essential oil in the sauna

SEES Eucalyptus Essential Oil, a wooden sauna bucket with a ladle and a eucalyptus sprig on a sauna bench

SEES Eucalyptus Essential Oil is a pure, undiluted essential oil and should always be used according to the product instructions.

For sauna use, add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to a ladleful of water just before pouring the water onto the hot sauna stones.

If you are trying it for the first time, start with one drop. Heat and steam make fragrance feel stronger, and it is always easier to add a little more later.

You do not need eucalyptus in every ladleful. One lightly scented round of löyly may be enough to change the atmosphere of the whole sauna session.

Add eucalyptus to the ladle, not the whole water bucket

For better control of the amount, add the essential oil to an individual ladleful of water rather than to the entire sauna water bucket.

This is especially important in a shared sauna. It means that the next person can use plain water if they prefer and nobody is unexpectedly exposed to a fragrance they have not chosen.

It also makes it much easier to keep the scent subtle: one scented löyly can be followed by plain water.

Never apply undiluted essential oil directly to the sauna stones

Do not drip pure eucalyptus essential oil directly onto hot sauna stones or onto the heater.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and are not intended to be used undiluted on the hot surfaces of a sauna heater.

Always add the oil to water according to the product instructions and follow the instructions provided with your own sauna heater.

Less is usually more

A sauna carries fragrance differently from an ordinary room.

Heat, steam and the relatively small space make scent feel stronger and more immediate. What seems like a very small amount can therefore become surprisingly noticeable once the löyly rises.

Start lightly. Use 1–2 drops as directed, wait and see how the fragrance develops before deciding whether you want more.

The aim is not to make the sauna smell strongly of eucalyptus. A good sauna scent becomes part of the heat, wood and steam rather than covering them.

If the scent feels too intense, stop using scented water and let fresh air circulate through the sauna.

Good ventilation matters

Good ventilation is part of a comfortable sauna experience whether you use fragrance or not.

Do not close or block ventilation openings in an attempt to keep the scent inside. Let the sauna work as it is designed to, and air the space between sessions when needed.

Fragrance should complement the sauna, not make the air feel heavy or overwhelming.

In a shared sauna, scent is a shared decision

In Finnish sauna culture, löyly is a shared experience. The same courtesy applies to fragrance.

Some people love eucalyptus in the sauna, while others prefer nothing more than water, wood and steam. Some people may also be sensitive to fragrances.

At home, ask the other sauna users before adding essential oil.

In a shared building, hotel or public sauna, always check whether fragrances are permitted. Never add essential oil to a shared water bucket unless this is specifically allowed.

When in doubt, plain water is the considerate choice.

A gentler option: use eucalyptus outside the sauna

Eucalyptus does not have to go into the löyly water to become part of your sauna ritual.

For a softer and more adjustable scent, place an aroma stone in the bathroom, dressing room or relaxation area outside the hot sauna.

Add 2–3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the aroma stone and allow the fragrance to release gradually into the space. Add more only when the scent has faded or when you prefer a stronger result.

This creates a gentler fragrance than scented löyly and makes the intensity easy to adjust to your own preference.

The SEES aroma stone is handmade in Finland from natural clay and needs no electricity, water or flame. It is a simple way to continue the scent ritual before or after the sauna.

A simple Finnish sauna ritual

Heat the sauna. Fill the bucket with fresh water. Take your time.

When you want to bring eucalyptus into the experience, add just 1–2 drops to a ladleful of water and let the fragrance rise gently with the löyly.

Or keep the sauna itself unscented and place an aroma stone with eucalyptus in the space outside.

There is a Finnish word for the considerate calm that belongs to sauna: saunarauha – sauna peace. A good scent should become part of that atmosphere, never overpower it.

Heat, water, wood, a little eucalyptus if you wish – and time.
