There is no single best way to fragrance a home. The right format depends on where, when and how you want to experience the scent.
A candle creates a moment. A diffuser fills a room for hours without any effort. An aroma stone lets you control exactly how much scent you notice, and where. A textile spray solves a problem none of the others can: the sofa, the yoga mat or the coat that needs freshening rather than fragrancing.
This guide compares all four, so you can match the format to the room and the moment, rather than the other way around.
Pure fragrance, and why the diffuser is different
The aroma stone, the candles and the textile spray are all scented with 100% pure essential oil — the same oils used in aromatherapy — with nothing synthetic added. The room diffuser is formulated differently: it blends essential oil with a small amount of synthetic fragrance, because an undiluted essential oil evaporates within hours and can't sustain a continuous scent on its own over weeks of use. Neither approach is better than the other, they simply suit different needs: full purity for a scent you control yourself, and staying power for one you want to run in the background.
| Format | Best for | Scent character | Duration | Flame | Textiles | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aroma stone + essential oil | Bedroom, desk, bathroom, small spaces | Subtle, local, adjustable | As needed | No | No | Add a few drops when scent fades |
| Room diffuser | Hallway, living room, spaces needing continuous scent | Continuous background fragrance | Continuous while in use | No | No | Low |
| Scented candle | Evening, living room, dining, a specific moment | Atmospheric, noticeable while burning | While candle is lit | Yes | No | Wick trimming + safe burning |
| Textile spray | Sofa, curtains, rugs, clothing and other suitable textiles | Immediate and targeted | Temporary / as needed | No | Yes | Spray when needed |
Note. Scent strength depends on room size, product amount, airflow and personal sensitivity, so we describe character rather than a strict low/medium/high scale. Aroma stone, candle and textile spray are 100% pure essential oil; the room diffuser blends in a small amount of synthetic fragrance for continuous release.
1. Start with the room, not the fragrance
Before choosing a scent, decide what you want the fragrance to do. The format follows from that decision, not the other way around:
- a subtle scent for a desk or a small room → aroma stone
- a continuous background scent for a hallway → room diffuser
- atmosphere for one evening → candle
- freshening for a sofa or another textile → textile spray
Thinking room-first, rather than scent-first, turns this into a plan instead of a shopping list.
2. Aroma stone – when you want control and subtlety

The SEES aroma stone is handmade in Finland from natural clay and works with 100% pure essential oil, nothing synthetic. Add a few drops of your chosen oil and it releases the fragrance gradually, without flame, water or electricity.
Because you decide how many drops to use and how often, the scent is easy to adjust. Keep the stone on a desk during the day, move it to a bedside table at night, and add more oil when the scent fades.
Best when you want fragrance close to you rather than throughout the entire room.

3. Room diffuser – for continuous background fragrance

Not everyone wants a daily ritual with their home fragrance. Sometimes it is enough for the scent simply to be there.
A reed diffuser, such as the SEES x Moomin Nordic Summer or Nordic Winter, works well in a hallway or living room. Once the reeds are in place, the fragrance is released continuously with very little daily maintenance. Its scent blends essential oil with a touch of synthetic fragrance, which is what lets it hold up over weeks rather than hours.
Aroma stone = intentional and adjustable.
Room diffuser = continuous and ambient.
That distinction is the one worth remembering when choosing between the two.
4. Scented candle – fragrance plus atmosphere

A candle's fragrance, scented with 100% pure essential oil, is only part of what it offers. It also brings light, a small flame and a clear beginning and end to a moment: something you light for an evening rather than leave running in the background.
The SEES x Johanna Gullichsen and SEES x minä perhonen candles bring their own design stories alongside the fragrance.
For safe use, trim the wick to about 5 mm. On the first burn, allow the wax to melt across the entire surface, and burn the candle for no more than four hours at a time. Place it on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and flammable materials, and never leave a lit candle unattended or within reach of children or pets.
5. Textile spray – scent where room fragrance can't go
A room diffuser fragrances the air. A textile spray is applied to the textile itself: a sofa, curtains, shoes or another fabric that is difficult to wash but easy to refresh.
SEES textile spray is based on white vinegar, contains biodegradable ingredients and is finished with 100% pure essential oils, nothing synthetic. The vinegar scent fades as the fabric dries, leaving the scent of the essential oils behind.
Spray the product onto the textile and allow it to air dry. As with any new product used on fabric, test it first on an inconspicuous area. The product is not suitable for stone, aluminium or polyacrylate surfaces.
6. How to layer fragrance without overdoing it
Different ways of fragrancing a home can also be combined. The key is restraint.
A simple rule works well:
Think in layers, but keep one of them dominant.
- Hallway: a room diffuser provides the continuous background.
- Living room: a candle adds another scent layer only for the evening.
- Sofa: textile spray is used only when needed.
- Bedroom: its own aroma stone can create a subtler scent world than the rest of the home.
One background scent plus one temporary accent is usually enough.
7. What about fragrance-sensitive guests?
Scent is personal. What feels subtle to one person can feel intense to another.
If you are expecting fragrance-sensitive guests, reduce or remove continuous fragrance sources in advance, skip the scented candle for that evening and ventilate the room.
Natural origin does not automatically mean fragrance-free, hypoallergenic or suitable for everyone.
If you know that a guest is sensitive to certain substances, check the product's ingredient list before use.
